Culture through English & Freshman English Reading B: Notes for final presentations・期末プレゼンテーションのノート

Hello and Happy New Year to all my Culture through English and Freshman Reading students!

How are you? Here are some notes for both classes about next week's (1/15) final presentations. These are things you should have ready for next week:

 

Printed-out slideshow handout (in black and white or grayscale) - PLEASE DO NOT print out your slides! Only a slideshow handout of 1-2 pages!

 

In your slideshow you should have:

• Title slide with your name, the name of the class, and the words final presentation on it
• A summary slide
• Then 4-5 slides in the body (中心 ) of your Power Point
• A closing or concluding slide ("Thank you for your attention", or a message like it on it)

Please remember that everybody needs to be here in the classes next week! The final presentations are like final exams, so you cannot miss next week! It will be our last meeting.

Freshman English Reading B: Fall semester final presentations・後期期末 プレゼンテーション

Hello!

How are you? Here are the guidelines and deadline for our fall semester final presentations (後期期末プレゼンテーション). 

The guidelines are the same as for the mid-term (中間) presentations. Like before, you will choose a different book from the library, read it, and present about it. 

So go to the library on your own. This is a very important point! Next week (12/11) - have a book to show me!

Please have these points in your presentation:

• A summary (要約) about the story - what is it about?
• The main character(s) of the book
• The qualities (質) or characteristics (性状) of the main character(s)
• The most interesting or exciting situation or event in the story
• The character you liked the most - and what qualities he or she had 

Guidelines

For this presentation like before, you make a Power Point show. You have to have a title slide, 5-7 slides with pictures and text on it, then a concluding slide that is colorful and interesting to look at. 

Deadline (締め切り)

We will do these presentations on January 15th, 2020 (1/15/20), so you have more than one (1) month to work on these.

In our next class (12/11), please show me what you are reading and will present on and we will make some time to do some work in class on the presentations. I would like to see your work and give you some advice on what you can do to make the best presentations you can. Please be ready to present on 1/15/20!

Culture through English A: Spring semester final presentations・前期末プレゼンテーション

Hello! 

How are you? Today I will introduce our final presentation assignment. Here are the topics, deadline, and guidelines.

Topics

You can choose one (1) of these topics:

• The origins of some family names in Japan
• An immigrant community in Japan (such as Koreans or Chinese born in Japan) or immigrant/unique ethnic community in another country

For the first topic choice, be sure to show:

• The ranking of the family name in Japan (for example, how common is the name) and number of people in Japan with this name
• Any changes in the kanji of the family name over time
• Any differences in kanji within the same family name (for example, the difference between 渡辺 and 渡邉) and reasons for this difference
• The different parts of Japan that the family name has migrated to and the parts of Japan that the name is most often found in 

For this second topic choice, here is a list of some unique communities and ethnic groups in some different countries. You do not have to choose one of these - you can think of an ethnic group or community of your own. But you can choose one (1) of these if you like:

• The Travelers (Ireland)
• Bretons (northwestern France)
• The Basques and their language (northwestern Spain/southwestern France)
• The Sorbs and their language (eastern Germany/southwestern Poland)
• German minorities of Russia, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan
• Hungarian minority of Romania
• The Sami people (northern Norway and Finland)
• Metis people of Quebec (Quebec, Canada)
• The Haida First Nations (British Columbia, Canada)
• Hasidic Jews of New York (U.S)
• The Lumbees (east central cost of the U.S.)
• Cajun (Acadian) people of Louisiana (the U.S.)

Special note about the deadline (締め切り)
I know that in our class today, I had said that we would do these presentations on July 24th.

I have made a mistake. I have found out that in fact our last day of class is July 17th. This is my fault and I am very sorry about my mistake. So, this means that our presentation day will be on July 17th (7/17), so you have two (2) weeks to prepare them.

I am very sorry once again about my mistake on this. I will give some extra points towards all of your final grades for my mistake.

Guidelines

You have a choice between doing a poster presentation or Power Point show. 

You will also write a summary (要約) about the presentation topic. You will hand this in on the day of the presentations.

Because we will not be here next week (6/26), I will show you this project now. 

The guidelines are the same as for the mid-term (中間) presentations. Like before, you will choose a different book from the library, read it, and present about it. 

But this time, you will go to the library on your own. This is a very important point! When we meet again - have a book to show me!

Please have these points in your presentation:

• A summary (要約) about the story - what is it about?
• The main character(s) of the book
• The qualities (質) or characteristics (性状) of the main character(s)
• The most interesting or exciting situation or event in the story
• The character you liked the most - and what qualities he or she had 

Guidelines

For this presentation, you can design a small poster or make a Power Point show. 

If you design a poster, I would like you to follow these guidelines:

• It has to be on A3 size paper
• You have to have 4-5 pictures on it (hand-drawn or photos, or a mix)
• It has to be colorful and interesting to look at

Freshman Reading 1B: Fall semester final presentations・後期期末 プレゼンテーション

Hello!

How are you? Here are the topics, deadline, and guidelines for our fall semester mid-term presentations (後期期末 プレゼンテーション).

Look at the picture above. It's of me in front of a statue of Ho Chi Minh in Hue, Vietnam in 2016. The place was the high school he graduated from when he was young. This is an example of one of the topics you could review - about travel in another country.

Topics

You have a choice of topics to present on. Choose one (1) of these: 

• How to travel in another country cheaply
• A person you admire (such as a parent or other family member, a teacher, or a famous person such as a singer, actor, writer, or a historical figure)
• A cultural tradition or unique cultural heritage site in another country 

Guidelines

For this presentation, you can design a small poster or make a Power Point show with an outline.

If you design a poster, I would like you to follow these guidelines:

• It has to be on A3 size paper
• You have to have 4-5 pictures on it (hand-drawn or photos, or a mix)
• It has to be colorful and interesting to look at 

If you make a Power Point show, I would like you to follow these guidelines: 

• You have to have a title slide - then 5-7 slides with pictures and text on it - then a closing slide
• It has to be colorful and interesting to look at
• Bring your own computer!

Deadline (締め切り)

We will do these presentations on January 16th (1/16), so you have three (3) weeks to work on these.

Next week (12/19), please have a topic idea to show me and we will make some time to do some work in class on the presentations. I would like to see your work and give you some advice on what you can do to make the best presentations you can. Please be ready on 1/16!
