Writing English A ・Links for grammar and other writing tips & hints

How are you? 
Here is a special post for all my writing students about grammar and other writing tips and hints.

I have a lot of blog pages on these kinds of notes. You can access these on the side menu of this blog on your computer. On your Smartphones, you can access these notes at the bottom of the display of this blog.

Freshman English Reading A: Healthy eating・健全な食べ物

Hello!



How are you? Let's look at some pictures of dishes from different countriesAre you hungry yet? You might be after this activity!

Activity

Let's look at these next dishes - and decide which ones are the healthiest!    


1. 

How many kilocalories (kcals) do you think this plate of pasta has? 

2.

How many kcals do you think this plate of bratwurst (German sausages) has? 


3. 

How many kcals does this Thai chicken curry have? 

4. 
 

How about all this sushi? How many kcals do you think it has? 

Write some guesses about their kilocalorie count on Manaba.

How are you? Let's look at some pictures of dishes from different countries

Take a look at the picture above - a Korean meal. Are you hungry yet? 

Activity

Let's look at these next dishes - and decide which ones are the healthiest!    


1. 

How many kilocalories (kcals) do you think this plate of pasta has? 

2.

How many kcals do you think this plate of bratwurst (German sausages) has? 


3. 

How many kcals does this Thai chicken curry have? 

4. 
 

How about all this sushi? How many kcals do you think it has? 

Talk about these and make some guesses about their kilocalorie count. Then I'll tell you what the kcal counts are! Talk about them like this

例えば:
A: I think Thai chicken curry is healthy. 
B: Really? I think sushi is healthier (= more healthy).  (I think sushi is healthier than Thai chicken curry.)

Try this talk with different kinds of foods

and, butの使うこと/how to use "and" and "but"

Hello!



How are you? Today let's do an activity on how to use "and" and "but." Here are some sentences:

例えば:He will fly to Hokkaido tomorrow afternoon. His bags are packed and ready.

例えば:He will fly to Hokkaido tomorrow afternoon, and his bags are packed and ready.


例え     I really want to go to Hawaii this summer with my friends. I have no money.


例え     I really want to go to Hawaii this summer with my friends, but I have no money.


Now - work with a partner or a group. Use "and" and "but" in the following sentences:

1. I went on a date. I had a great time. 

2. I try to do my math homework. I fall asleep every time.

3. He enjoyed his piece of chocolate cake. He felt sick later.

4. She likes surfing in summer. She goes to the Shonan area whenever she can.

5. Sarina doesn’t like math. So does Chiho. They both enjoy listening to music.

6. Yuko is taking a writing class. Mina is one of her classmates. They used to sit together. They don’t right now.

7. He was tired and went to bed early. She stayed up. When they got up the next morning at the same time, he was refreshed. She was still sleepy.

8. Marco reads books. Yu reads books too. Marco is interested in reading about history and politics. Yu prefers science fiction.
