Writing English A: Spring final writing assignment・前学期期末作文

Hello!

How are you? Here is our spring semester final assignment - writing comparison and contrast (比較対照). 

In this assignment, you have a choice about comparing and contrasting two (2) different works of art, or two (2) different pieces of music.

About works of art
Let us begin with an example of a work of art. The image above is a very famous painting by the great 20th-century French artist Henri Matisse called Red Room (Harmony in Red). It was painted in 1908. 

What comes to your mind as you see this painting? Is there a reason for the design the way it is - for example, where the window is placed in the picture? Or the white apron of the woman at the table on the other side of the picture?

Do you feel it is a peaceful picture? Or maybe is it not so peaceful, because red is a strong color?

These are examples of things you can write about with art.

Go to this link. It is a separate page on this blog, but it is not a regular blogpost. (On the web version of this blog, you can find it in the sidebar menu under this name: Artwork for student writing.) 

When you see these works of art, what comes to your mind? What other images, feelings, or even scenarios do you imagine? Follow the steps that are shown on the blogpage when you go to it. 

NEW - when you write about your two works of art, include these points:

1. General description (描写) about both artworks - what is in the pictures, such as the background or setting (outdoors, indoors, and such), figures or objects, and/or shapes and designs, what kinds of colors are dominant (支配的), and so on.

2. Mood and impression - what might be the dominant mood or impression that you get from the figures or objects - what kind of happiness, lightness, seriousness, or darkness in feeling or emotion comes through, what kind of message seems to be communicated, and so on. 

3. Preference (嗜好、好みこと) - in the end, which artwork you like more, with reasons - which artwork seems more powerful, or moving, or interesting, or convincing (説諭、説得的) to you. 

4. Scenario - here is a part of the writing I hope you can have fun with. When you view the work of art you liked better, what kind of story or scenario comes to your mind? What do you imagine? What do you see? You can imagine characters, a place, a time, objects, animals - anything! Write a very short, mini-story to this music! 

About music
You also have the choice to write about pieces of music. Here is an example of one such piece of music from your homework assignment on writing about music by a Norwegian trumpeter and bandleader, Nils Petter Molvaer, and one of his pieces, "Baboon Moon." 

As you listened to this piece of music, what came to your mind? What combinations of musical instruments are there and what did you feel they express? Were there reasons for the kind of tempo it has, or the instruments that you heard the most? Did the tempo and instrumental sound express to you the title of the piece of music and the location that the title comes from? 

So, with any piece of music, these are examples of the kinds of things you can write about with music.

How much to write
I would like you to write around 4-5 paragraphs on one (1) of the pairs of pictures or pairs of music pieces. But - do not stop yourself! If you can write more - go for it!

As I mentioned in class, if you do not want to write about any of the artwork or music on the blog  page links, and want to write about two works of art or two pieces of music of your own, you can.

Special note: If you write about your own choices of music, I ask that they be instrumental - no vocals - and that they be short - each one no more than four (4) minutes each. 

Collection of your writing into books
I am gathering your writing about the artworks from the blogpage link into a book called Every Picture Tells a Story - student writing about art and photography. 

Likewise, any of your writing about the music from the separate blogpage link I am also gathering into a different book called Words on Music - student writing about music. 

So whichever task you choose - writing about the artworks or writing about the pieces of music - try to write to the best you can. Your writing could get into a book!

Deadline (締め切り) 

It will be due on August 5th (8/5), so you have two (2) weeks to work on this. Before that time, if you need any advice or guidance, message me anytime.

I would encourage you to write as much as you can, because your work may be published (出版した) on both this blog and in the Every Picture Tells a Story and Words on Music books.

While you have maximum freedom on this assignment, there will be one rule for whatever kind of theme or topic you choose - that is, you cannot simply do the same thing you did before.

For example, if you would like to write an analysis comparing and contrasting two works of art - they cannot be the same works of art you wrote on before. They would have to be two completely different choices of art. Same with music, or an opinion piece - the subjects, or topic, have to be different from what you did before.

Notes on task examples - comparison and contrast

I do not want to give a list of topic suggestions as I have done before, as I would really like you to explore and have the freedom to write on what you really would like. But as an example of a comparison and contrast task, here is a suggestion for a topic: Comparing and contrasting your life in high school to your life in university. 

While many of you might have had similar experiences in your high school life, I would like you to go into details. First, where did you go to high school? What were your favorite classes there? What were the classes you didn’t like? What do you feel were your best subjects? How about your worst subjects? What about the school facilities (施設) – for example, the classrooms, places for sports, or things like the school lunches? What were they like? 

How do any of these things compare (比べる) with your life here at Daito Bunka so far? What do you find about the classes in university that are different (or similar) to your high school education? Once again – go into details about these things. What has been the most difficult thing you have found so far about your university life and education – and what has been the best thing?

Notes about poetry

If you choose to try to write a poem from the notes in the first semester, this may be quite challenging - but one that may also be new, unique, and even fun for you. In this choice, write an original poem in English on any topic of your choice. It could be about yourself, about people around you, about nature, animals, or a place. 

We have seen with the poetry we have read in the first semester how words can be used in ways that are unexpected in everyday writing –  about how they can create images, and how words can be used to show meanings that may be outside the regular way we use them.

This can be very freeform - words do not have to rhyme (韻を踏まない), and you can use words to bring out different feelings - for example, to show how something is like something else, or is as something that is unexpected.  

How much to write

I would like to see you write as much as you can - go for more than what you may have done before if your assignments have been shorter. For the comparison and contrast and opinion choices, I would like you to write around 4-5 paragraphs. But do not limit yourselves - write as much as you can!

I am gathering your writing into the various books I have mentioned before in class. For poetry writing, I would like you to try to write at least three (3) verses in the poem. I am gathering these into a new collection called Ways with Words - a collection of student creative writing. 

So whichever is your choice of writing, try to write to the best you can, because your work may be published (出版した) on both the blog and in these books!

Deadline (締め切り) 

It will be in the new year, on our last day of class, on January 15th, 2020 (1/15/20), and it will be a final version (完成版). This means you should begin writing now – do not wait until the day or night before!

Writing English A: Spring semester final writing assignment・前期末作文

How are you? Here is our spring semester final writing assignment (前期末作文) - writing an analysis of a poem.

Topic
I will post here links for two (2) different poems - "Jaguar" by Francisco Alarcon, and "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost.

Read both poems - then choose the one (1) that you like the most.

These poems are very different from each another, but each one has rich, and unexpected, things in them. So for whichever poem you choose, write about these points:

• A general background to the poem (for example, in the case of “Jaguar,” an animal in a zoo, with some explanation as to why or how you believe the animal got there)
• The kinds of metaphors (隠喩) or other images shown by the words
• A surprising point or some unexpected image, or use of a word or some words, in the poem
• Your idea of a bigger or hidden theme, issue, or story that the poem hints at
• What you think or feel about the poem – if and how you liked it (or – this is okay – if and how you did not like it)

I am gathering writing on these topics into a book called Words on Words - this is a book about student analysis and opinions on poetry, stories, and other literature. The best of your writing on this topic could go into this book, so write to the best you can! 

How much to write

I would like you to write as much as you can, because your work may be published (出版した) on both this blog and in the Words on Words book. I would like to see maybe 3-4 paragraphs' worth of writing.

Writing English 2B: Final post・最後のポスト

How are you? As I say in the title, this is the final post to all of you. 

I have enjoyed having all of you as students this year and will miss you!

Writing English 2B: Final writing assignment・後学期期末作文

Hello!

How are you? Here is our final writing assignment (期末作文).

Topic

You will come in to class and write a timed essay, from start to finish, within a set time, on January 16th (1/16). (This is why I have a picture of a clock at the top of the post!)

The topic is open – you can write about anything you want – but you have to follow these guidelines for your writing:

1. You have to have a topic already decided and researched – so you can bring notes to class – not an already-finished essay! Only notes.

2. This has to be structured like a short essay – so it’s okay if you do not completely finish by the end of our time. As long as it is structured like an essay, it’s okay!

3. You must write this in pen – but you do not have to write perfectly! So no erasers or white-out ink. I want your paper to be dirty and marked up!

4. You must write continuously – you cannot come in and sit not writing for the time. If you do this, I have to give you a zero for this assignment.

Important notes:   

Between now and the writing day, we will try out writing some practice topics to a timer. But both in and outside of class, begin gathering ideas for a topic, and then you will practice writing on your topic as much as you can to a timer as well.

Please review the Chapter 8 in the textbook for the structure of an essay - this will be a refresher for you on what an essay is and how to build your ideas in it. 

I may post some ideas for topics on this blog on a separate post this week. Please check it!

The most important thing is that you try your best – if you do this, I can give you credit even if you do not finish by the end of the time.

How much to write

As much as you can within our set time. I will tell you how much time you will have on our timed essay writing day.

Start thinking about topics you are interested in – they do not have to come from the textbook. If you see a topic that you like from the textbook, you can use it – but one way or another, I would like to see you choose a topic that you have to do some research on.

Writing English 2A: Special note for 7/18 class・7月18日の知らせ

Hello!

How are you? This is a quick note to let you know that next week (7/18), we will meet in Building 7, Room 232. So please do not go to our regular classroom - go to 7232!

7232 is a computer room, so please bring:

• Your finished typed writing files - your outline and your final version of the final writing assignment
• Also bring a USB. If you do not have a USB - buy one (they're cheap)!

If you are not finished with your writing, you can finish it in the computer room. I will look at your outline and final version, and give you advice, comments and any hints for it. Any changes you need to make you can then make on the computer, and then print out. 

See you next week in Room 7232!

Writing English 2A: Spring semester final writing assignment・前期期末作文

How are you? Here is the spring semester final writing assignment - writing a final paper based on your thesis statement and outline from writing assignment 3.

This assignment will be important because it will go directly from our writing assignment 3 (作文 3), so it is important that you do this one based on your topic in writing assignment 3.

Topics/themes

There is no set topic or theme with this assignment – but whatever topic you wrote an outline and thesis statement about in your writing assignment 3, there is one rule you have to follow: You have to write about the same topic for your final writing assignment. So as I have said before, the outline and thesis statement for this third assignment will be preparation for your final writing assignment. 

I said this on the handout and blogpost for writing assignment 3, but I will say it here again as a special rule: You can choose to write about something from the themes (テーマ) of writing assignment 1 or 2, but you cannot write about the same topic you wrote about before - you have to choose something different. For example, you have to write about a different person than what you wrote about before, or a different topic in the 1st or 2nd assignment themes.

Deadline (締め切り)

It will be July 18th (7/18), so I want you to bring in a first draft (下書き) of the thesis statement and outline next week (来週) in your notebooks in pencil. I will then review your work, and you can change things about the thesis statement and outline as you need to. Then you can write to the finish and turn it in on 7/18. 

While I can give you some in-class time to write, you will have to work on your writing outside of class to make it the best piece of writing you have ever made!

特別ポスト: Places & Traces (Part 3)

How are you? Here is Part 3 to some examples that will go into the collection of student writing about places and memories called Places & Traces. 

Read through these and post some short comments at the bottom. 

Let's keep going! The first one is unique - about more than one memory. Sometimes we have trouble choosing which of our memories are special because many of them are so important to us. So here's a great one about three memories. Take a look! 

My three memories

I have three memories. First, I tell you about my hometown. My hometown is Niigata. I lived there for 18 years. My family live there now. Niigata has a lot of charms. For example, foods and beautiful nature, a hot spring and ski. Rice called koshihikari is very famous and very very delicious. If you were to visit Niigata, you could eat koshihikari.

I went back home during Golden Week. I met my family and my best friends after a long time. I went shopping with my family. I also played and talked with my best friend. I was excited. When I parted from my family, I was sad. So I’m going to go back home in summer vacation. I love my family. I love Niigata.

Second, I belonged to a brass band when I was a junior high school student. I played the oboe. Do you know the oboe? It is unfamiliar, so I’m little sad. I practiced very hard to get a gold prize and to take part in the next round. Thanks to hard practice, I got through to West Kanto competition. I regret that I couldn’t join All-Japan tournament, but I was satisfied. I learned that it is important to cooperate with my companion.

Finally, I took a trip to Kyoto with my family. I went to Kyoto five times. I like to see the temple and shrine. My family like to see these, too. My favorite temple is Kiyomizu temple. The view from the stage of Kiyomizu is splendid. I also like Kinkaku temple. It is very gorgeous. And Kyoto’s foods were very delicious. I especially like Kyoto’s sweets. My favorite sweet is Gion’s parfait. It was delicious and beautiful. With a opportunity, I would recommend to you that you eat it. I sometime want to visit Kyoto with ma family or my friends.

I learned importance of people through three memories. when I have troubles, a lot of people help me. When I feel happy, I’m always with my family or my friends. So I think I want to value relationships with people in the future.

A great one! Now let's keep going with memories. Here's another one - not so much about a place, but a very special event: 

One great memory of mine is taking part in the English speech contest for the first time when I was a first-year high school student. After I entered high school, I was worried about being unable to adjust myself to new school life, though most of my classmates had already made friends and enjoy chats. Just in those days, my homeroom teacher recommended me to participate in this contest. This contest is organized by a certain university, and we give speeches for five minutes about our favorite themes. In addition, this has the regional competition and the prefectural competition, which one who won the regional competition will advance to the prefectural competition. At first, I thought it was impossible for me to give a speech in public, but I decided to enter it after I was told by the teacher this was also to improve my English.

As soon as I decided it, I began to make a draft. I determined the title “My Dream” because I wanted to give a fresh impression with a subject of future-oriented thinking. I started from about one hundred words, and in the end the manuscript of more than six hundred words was completed. However, here I faced the biggest barrier for me: I hadn’t been training in pronunciation until then. I’m not a returnee student or I don’t have any experiences of studying abroad, so I had to learn it from scratch. I managed to understand the minimum difference of pronunciation and get the secret of intonation after I practiced though few signs of improvement see, and finally the day of the speech contest has arrived.

That morning, the teacher said to me, “Don’t try to do your best. Enjoy!” These words eased my tension, and I could give a speech in a relaxed manner. As a result, I won the contest, and I advanced to the prefectural competition. Although I could not win a prize there, I had a lot of valuable experiences I could never have had in usual school life.

This would have marked an important turning point for me. It was a so big challenge. I also took part in this contest when I was a second-year and a third-year student, but the first time left the strongest impression in my mind. Through this speech contest, I learned the importance of “trying.” It was maybe because I assumed by myself I couldn’t do it in everything that I had gone into my shell until then. There may be something you regret doing, but you cannot get anything, much less reflect on it unless you try. I will never forget this memory. This is my pride. 

Another fantastic one, with great feeling to it. Sometimes, however, some places and situations aren't so nice, but help make us into who we are for the better, like this one: 

My school life

This is my best memory. I’ll tell you about my high school life. I refused to go to school twice, in junior high school and high school, because human relationship wasn’t good. I thought that I failed in junior high school, so I tried my best at high school. However, I also failed in high school. I entered from private junior high school alone, so I was seen strange eyes by around people me. For example they told me “smart” “rich” “can do anything”. That’s why I was a title of honor student at school. There were many people depending on me, but some people were jealous or someone who gave a grudging. The high school wasn’t very good, so I always had higher grades, so more jealous people increased.  

I advanced to a special class in the 2nd grade. It was good to be able to study more, but mild bullying began. So I had lunch at the stairs by myself, and I didn’t have free time off for class many times. Finally I can’t stay in class. Then decided to discuss with my mother and change to school the 2nd grade in February. I began to attend high school credits in February. There were children and individual persons, come in like me. So I was able to contact my friends and teacher at my own pace. I was able to face my new self at that school. So I don’t regret changing to the school and I thought that it was rather good. I could graduate safely and I also met good friends.

It was a difficult high school life, but without this experience. I won’t be myself now. So, I chose my best memory it.

Incredible - and brave. Of course, places are still special, and they are where so many of our best memories come from:  

My favorite place is Inuma-kata Park. To go there, you leave the Higashi-Urawa station to the strait, turn right at the scrambled intersection, and go strait.  When you turn right at the scrambled intersection, you can see a big tree. That is landmark. On the way to the park, you go through two restaurants.  So you can eat lunch there by you arrive the park. You can also buy a box lunch because there is a convenience store in front of the station.

Inuma-kata Park is bigger than other common parks in Japan, so the park has a lot of facility. For example, there is big pond. In the middle of the pond, there is small mountain that piled up stones, and some ducks live is there. Some people, mostly elderly people, give food for ducks, so ducks lives in there are a little fat. Well, there is a bridge across the pond and there is a bench in the middle of the bridge. You can see the mountain of stones from the bench, and you can feel Japanese feelings that beauty through a sense of austerity and antiquity. There is an open space next to the pond and there are cherry blossoms around the space. When the cherry blossoms bloom in spring, you can see the very beautiful landscape. At that time, there are people who walk with a dog at the park and people who enjoy a cherry blossom viewing. The park has the best place to enjoy the scenery. It’s a hill at the edge of the park. You can see trees and cityscape from there.

There are three reasons why my favorite place is that park. First, I feel free to go there with my dog for a walk. The area around Higashi-Urawa station is residential area, so I can easy to go for a walk for that park. Second reason is I can communicate with locals there. Because almost people are relax, so their heart become clam. Final reason is I can feel the four seasons by going to that park. In spring, I can see a lot of cherry blossom.  In summer, I can see fresh green leaves. In autumn, I can enjoy autumn leaves. In winter, I can see stars from the hill at night because the air is clean. Because of these reasons, I like Inuma-kata Park.
