Freshman English Reading A: Interesting sports・面白いスポーツ

Hello!



How are you? Today let's look at some different sports in different countries

Activity

Look at the three (3) videos below. Choose one (1) of them. 

Here's the first video of a popular sport in Ireland called hurling. What do you think of it? It's a very fast sport - so watch the video more than once! What other sports is hurling like?


Next - here's a sport some of you may have heard of from Thailandmuay thai. What do you think of it? It's also fast - so watch the video more than once! What other sports is muay thai like? 


Finally - this is a sport I watched as a child in AustraliaAustralian rules football. What do you think of it? It's another fast sport - so watch it more than once! What other sports is Australian football like?


After you watch the video of the sport you chose, and answer this question:

What equipment and skills do you think you need for it?

Look at this picture above of a hill. What comes to your mind when you see this picture? What do you think of? How do you feel? What images do you get about these hills? 

Activity/homework
Look at these pictures of places

Choose three (3) of these places, and write one (1) short paragraph about each place you chose. (You can choose the picture at the top as one of your places to write about.) 


What comes to your mind when you see these places? What do you think of? How do you feel? What images do you get? 


Write these short paragraphs in your notebooks

Writing English A: Describing & characterizing people・人物を描写、性格の描写

Hello!



How are you? Let's look at how to describe people (人物を描写する).

1. Look at the picture at the top:

This woman has long black hair and closed eyes. Her hand is on her head. 


2. Now here are some extra details about her


She looks stressed out.  

3. So, a sample description (例え描写about her looks like this: 


This woman has long black hair and closed eyes. Her hand is on her head. She looks stressed out.    

4. Now connect some of your sentences, and go on to write more about what you think of the person, and what she is doing:

This woman has long black hair and closed eyes. Her hand is on her head, and she looks stressed out.. I think she's...

Activity/homework
Now let's try to do the same thing - choose two (2) of the people in the pictures below. Write a short paragraph (描写) about each person:

1. What he or she looks like, the clothes he or she is wearing, and what he or she is doing.

2. What you think his or her feelings are, and why he or she feels the way you think. 

Note: In some of the pictures, you might not see the person's clothes, so you can just write about what they look like and how you think they feel.

Hello!



How are you? Today, let's look at hobbies (趣味) and interests (興味). 

What are your hobbies and interests? What do you like to do in your free time? What do you do that helps to relax you? 

Look at the picture at the top. It's a PC gaming set-up. This is a popular hobby in so many countries, including Japan. Do you like gaming? 

Activity
Look at the pictures below. These are some popular hobbies and interests in Japan and other countries. Do you do any of these things? If not, what do you know about them? If you haven't done any of these things, which ones would you be most interested in trying? 

There's a space at the bottom with no picture for it. This is where you talk about your own idea of a hobby or interest if you have another one you can think of. 

Talk about these with your classmates!
