What comes to your mind when you see these places? What do you think of? How do you feel? What images do you get?

Write these short paragraphs in your notebooks

Culture through English 2A: Short presentation 1・ショートプレゼンテーション1

Hello!

How are you? Today I will introduce our first short presentations about our identities.

Who are you as a person? What would you say about yourself - for example, your character or your temperament (気質)? What are your hobbies or interests? What do you think people like the most about you?

While I have given all of you the handout about the presentations, I am posting it here as well as another way to help remind all of you about what you can do.

Guidelines

I would like you to design a small poster on A3-size paper about yourself. It can be titled My Identity or About Me, or some other title like that.

Have different sections on the poster about the following points:

  • your family
  • where you come from
  • your schools
  • your hobbies & interests
  • your character
You can design it anyway you want, with pictures and some writing about yourself - but please have the pictures and the writing be about the points above!

We will present in small groups to each other for around 5-7 minutes, including a Q&A from the classmates we will present to.

Deadline (締め切り)

We will do these presentations next week on May 2nd (5/2).

We will do some presentation practice in class before we do the real presentations. These presentations will be the only things we do on May 2nd.

Good luck! Have fun making these posters about the people you know the best - yourselves.

See you next week with your great posters!

Reading English 1A: Interesting sports・面白いスポーツ

Hello!

How are you? Today let's look at some different sports in different countries

First - here's a video of a popular sport in Ireland called hurling. What do you think of it? It's a very fast sport - so watch the video more than once! What other sports is hurling like?

Next - here's a sport some of you may have heard of from Thailand - muay thai. What do you think of it? It's also fast - so watch the video more than once! What other sports is muay thai like?

Finally - this is a sport I watched as a child in Australia - Australian rules football. What do you think of it? It's another fast sport - so watch it more than once! What other sports is Australian football like?

Activity/homework
Watch these videos, and answer these questions in your notebooks:

1. What equipment and skills do you think you need for hurling?
2. What equipment and skills do you think you need for muay thai?
3. What equipment and skills do you think you need for Australian rules football?

Have fun! See you next time!

Writing English 2A: Describing & characterizing people・人物の性格描写

Hello!

How are you? Let's learn more about how to describe and characterize people (人物の性格描写して).

Activity

Look at these pictures. Write about the people in these pictures. The picture at the top of this post is an example (例えば:

This person has white curly hair and a beard. He's old but happy.

Now try to write some extra details about their clothes (洋服がさらに細かい描写):

He's wearing a cream-colored t-shirt and a white hat with a brown band.

So, your description (描写) looks like this:

This person has white curly hair and a beard. He's old but happy.
He's wearing a cream-colored t-shirt and a white hat with a brown band.

Now characterize (性格描写して) the person:

He's smiling and seems happy with his life. He has a kind word and good feeling for people.

So your description and characterization might look something like this, with some connection of sentences to make your writing fuller:

This person has white curly hair and a beard. He's old but happy. He's wearing a cream-colored t-shirt and a white hat with a brown band. He's smiling and seems happy with his life, and has a kind word and good feeling for people.

Now try with these other pictures

2.

2.
3.

Have fun!

Culture through English 2A: Hobbies & interests ・趣味、興味

Hello!

How are you? Today, let's look at hobbies (趣味) and interests (興味).

What are your hobbies and interests? What do you like to do in your free time? What do you do that helps to relax you?

Look at the picture at the top. It's a model airplane. Have you ever made a model airplane from a plastic kit? This is a popular hobby in many countries, including Japan.

Japanese model airplane kits made by companies such as Hasegawa and Tamiya are famous all over the world.

Activity
Look at the pictures below. These are some popular hobbies and interests in Japan and other countries. Do you do any of these things? If not, what do you know about them? If you haven't done any of these things, which ones would you be most interested in trying?

There's a space at the bottom with no picture for it. This is where you talk about your own idea of a hobby or interest if you have another one you can think of.

Talk about these with your classmates!

knitting

cooking

making model trains & railroads

coin collecting

practicing martial arts (such as judo)

fishing

practicing yoga

(no picture)
your own idea!

Have fun with these. See you next time!
